New Releases: New Red Order

VDB is thrilled to welcome New Red Order to the collection! New Red Order (NRO) is a public secret society facilitated by core contributors Adam KhalilZack Khalil, and Jackson Polys, three VDB artists known for their earlier collaboration on The Violence of a Civilization Without Secrets (2017) before forming NRO. New works from NRO include their Culture Capture series of interventions around museums and monuments and their Savage Philosophy of Endless Acknowledgment Suite (2018-2020) which takes to task institutional gestures of engagement with indigeneity. NRO's works comprise various nuanced satirical explorations of decolonizing projects. VDB has acquired 13 new works available for screenings and educational institutions.

Simultaneously, VDB is excited to have acquired works from NRO’s core contributors who engage in a variety of collaborative duos and trios extending beyond the public secret society. Adam Khalil and Zack Khalil's INAATE/SE/ [it shines a certain way. to a certain place/it flies. falls./] (2016), kaleidoscopically reimagines an Anishinaabe story, the "Seven Fires Prophecy," which both predates and predicts first contact with Europeans. Adam Khalil brings in various experimental collaborators — Maria MeinildAdam Piron, Bayley Sweitzer, and Anton Vidokle — to explore the spectacle of Seminole alligator wrestling, mythologize colonial vampirism, speculate on resurrection, and imagine lifeforms tinged by blue screen hues.

"New Red Order — emerging out of contradistinction from the Improved Order of Red Men, a secret society that 'plays Indian' — calls attraction toward indigeneity into question, yet promotes this desire, and enjoins potential non-Indigenous accomplices to participate in the co-examination and expansion of Indigenous agency." — NRO

NRO will be showcased in the upcoming European Media Art Festival (EMAF) in Osnabrück, Germany as the selected artist for Artists in Focus, a section dedicated to practices at the intersection of art and cinema. VDB's Distribution Assistant Nicky Ni will be in attendance at EMAF, as well as at this year's Videonale in Bonn, which will feature VDB artists Dani & Sheilah ReStackVALIE EXPORT, and Lynn Hershman Leeson.

The Violence of a Civilization Without Secrets (2017) will screen in VDB's upcoming Roundabout program at Gene Siskel Film Center on April 24 at 6pm. Read more below!
